Proverbs 14:30 – A sound heart is life to the body, but envy is rottenness to the bones.
A few months ago on Twitter I came across a tweet by @NomzamoMbatha. She was responding to another tweet that was talking about not hating on someone else’s success because they know their time is coming. She quoted it and said, “When God is blessing your Neighbour, it means He is in the neighbourhood.”
This came right on time for me because I was in a season of jealousy and envy. I didn’t understand why other people were getting the opportunities that I wasn’t. I didn’t understand why God blessed people with certain relationships and not me. I was jealous, I was envious, and I was not content.
Proverbs 14:30 explains that jealousy can destroy you from the inside out. However, jealousy does not always come through your actions or words as jealousy. It can display itself as anger or hurt. You lash out at close friends or you separate yourself from family members. Jealousy doesn’t allow you to be happy about the success of others. I want you to understand that jealousy can hinder the abundant life that God has for us. Psalm 37:4 says “Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your hearts desires.”
Psalm 37:4 – Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your hearts desires.
If there is something that you want to receive from God, you have to first take delight in him and be content with the blessings that He has already given you. When you look at other people’s blessings, you miss out on the ones that are right in front of you. I have found that when I focus on Jesus and the blessings that He has given me, I have an abundance of joy and satisfaction which causes me to yearn not for the things that other people have.
Another thing that I want you to get from this post is the idea that it is important to be genuinely happy for people when you see them receiving blessings and achieving their goals. Philippians 2:3 says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourself.”
Philippians 2:3 – Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourself.
For the sake of this message let’s replace selfish ambition with rivalry. Now let’s read the scripture as “Don’t do anything if your sole purpose is to only compete with somebody else.” Everything that we do should be done for the glory of God and in doing this you leave no room for rivalry, selfish ambition or jealousy. Most of us want people to clap for and celebrate our victories, but when someone else wins, the only thing we’re worried about is “what about me?!”
Valuing others above yourself does not mean that you won’t receive your blessings. God is a great God and He has amazing blessings in store for us all. The last thing that I want to leave you with is the effects that jealousy can have on your life. In James 4: 1-2 it says, “What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.”
James 4:1-2 – What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this that your passions are at war within you? You desire and you do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.
This scripture says that when you desire things that you do not have, you murder to get it. It says that when you yearn to possess it, but it’s out of your reach so you fight and quarrel. I want you to know that when something is meant for you, it won’t take all that for you to get it.
When you yearn for things not meant for you, you fight, kick, and scream. You beg God and ask Him to place something in your life that you don’t deserve, or if you do deserve it, you aren’t ready for it. If you do receive what you thought you were ready for when you weren’t, you can’t keep it because you are not in a position of sustainability. This is why success comes and goes for so many people.
My prayer for you today is that you release the chains of jealousy and envy in your life. I pray that you open yourself up to God and He places in you a peace that reminds you that every blessing that is meant for you, you will receive if you keep a little faith. As always I want to thank God for using me as His messenger. If no one has told you recently, you are loved and you are worthy. You mean something to me and you mean something to God. He has a great plan for your life if you make the decision to follow Him. I hope that this post will resonate with you in your day to day life as you began to work on the things that are stopping you from living your best life.
