What are you willing to sacrifice for eternal life? What earthly pleasures are you willing to give up for everlasting joy and peace?
So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time – houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions – and in the age to come, eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first. – Mark 10:29-31
In the book of Mark we find Jesus walking down the road when someone comes up to Him asking what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus tells him that he must follow all of the commandments (don’t commit murder, adultery, don’t steal, etc). The man answers that throughout his life he had followed all of these commandments.
Jesus told him that he lacked in one area. He commanded him to go sell everything he had, give it to the poor, take up his cross, and follow Him. The young men was disappointed with this command because he had great possessions and wasn’t too excited to give them up.
It’s amazing to me how hard it is for us to sacrifice our time, our money, our belongings for God. Especially when I think about the fact that He made the ultimate sacrifice when He sent Jesus to die for our sins. We claim to love God, but don’t like that love comes with sacrifice and giving. Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” 1 John 4:9 says, “In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.”
If we truly love God, we have to be willing to give up everything we have to follow Him. We have to be absolutely content with all that we have in Him. We cannot love God and love things of this world at the same time. Take your pick!
So I ask again. What are you willing to sacrifice for eternal life? What earthly pleasures are you willing to give up to receive a hundredfold in heaven?
